"PARERGO"の由来 | why "PARERGO" ?

デリダの"PARERGON" | "PARERGON" by Derrida

フランスの哲学者ジャック・デリダが提唱した概念「PARERGON（パレルゴン）」をご存じでしょうか。
絵画や額縁や彫刻の台座のようなものをパレルゴンと呼びます。作品の外側にある「周辺的なもの」でありながらも、作品の成立に不可欠なもののことです。
例えば、額縁がなければ絵画は壁にかけられず、彫刻の台座がなければ床に置かれません。
デリダはパレルゴンを再定義することで、カントの「美的判断力批判」における「純粋な美」と「付随的な美」の二分法を批判しました。

Do you know "PARERGON", a concept proposed by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida?
It refers to things like picture frames or sculpture bases. They are "peripheral things" outside the artwork, but indispensable for the artwork to exist.
For example, without a frame, a painting cannot be hung on the wall; without a base, a sculpture cannot be placed on the floor.
By redefining parergon, Derrida criticized Kant's dichotomy of "pure beauty" and "adventitious beauty" in his Critique of Judgment.
